Pulling The Flag

Worlds Review: GB start strong

Here we are again, at another flag football world championship tournament. This time, it’s taking place in Miami (after a last-minute brain fart from original hosts in the¬†Bahamas), and GB’s men’s team will be hoping to be one of the four teams to emerge from a crowded Group A.

First things first: It’s a little wetter than we hoped in the sunshine state. Heavy rain led to the cancellation of a number of matches on day one, including Great Britain’s scheduled clash with Korea. That’s likely to be played on Saturday, while a venue change means that GB are set to take on Italy at 8am local (1pm UK), and Canada at 1.20pm (6.20pm UK). The teams have also been moved to a 3G venue a little further from basecamp due to the soggy conditions.

So, let’s get down to some match action from the game we’ve got: A 49-6 victory over Guatemala.

While there are some challenging games to come in Group A, the Lions – and new head coach Alan Young – will be pleased with their performance in their opening game.

Quarterback Calvin Tarlton connected with Gary Elliott for an early score, with the imposing Aberdeen receiver marking his return from the broken collarbone that kept him out of the Euros in Spain. Jamie Doak added a second soon afterwards, and GB headed into the half with a commanding 26-0 lead.

The side kicked on in the second half, extending their lead to 49-6 by full-time. It was a good day for Kenny Bello and Julian Holburn-White, who hauled in two touchdowns each. Michael Bradley-Banszki got a TD of his own, while Bello, Elliott (2) and Bud McFerren added extra points.

On defense, Dean Whittingslow seized GB’s first interception of the competition, while Kevin Woods managed a sack, and Richard Cooling got a tackle for loss. The team even picked up a safety.

In other matches that impact on Group A, Denmark won 24-12 against Italy, while Canada defeated Korea 27-7. That means that GB finished day one in first place in the group on points difference. Woop woop.
