Cardiff and Leicester Reach Britbowl

The Cardiff Hurricanes and Leicester Eagles booked their spots at Britbowl with big victories on Saturday.

Leicester startled the neutrals by defeating the defending champion London Rebels 24-19. And Cardiff joined them after throughly dismantling the West Essex Showboats by a score of more than 40 to 7 (awaiting confirmation).

They’ll be the south’s representatives at the Britbowl finals in Doncaster on September 20. The two qualifiers from the north will be decided tomorrow.

A group of eight teams travelled to Northampton with their eyes on those two precious spots, and the day started off with a bang. The un-fancied Solent Thrashers nearly unseated the SEC North champions, but went down by a whisker to the West Essex Showboats. Despite leading 26-13 at the half, the Thrashers lost out by a score of 35-34.

It was less close elsewhere. The Cardiff Hurricanes blanked the Northants Titans 42-0, while the London Rebels took out the Buckingham Blitz 52-22. The Chichester Sharks had one of the most exciting routes to the playoffs, but fell short in a 50-40 shoot-out against the Leicester Eagles.

Even without a starter or two, the Rebels looked odds-on to head to Britbowl once again. But Leicester lived up to their “dark horses” tag, edging out the folks from the capital. Cardiff showed no mercy to West Essex in the other game, qualifying at a canter.

We’ll find out which teams will be joining them after the northern conference does battle in Newcastle, from 11.30am tomorrow.
